Read Isaiah 51:1-8
The Eternal Promise
Lift Up Your Eyes
Isaiah 51:5-6 declares God's righteousness draws near while heavens vanish like smoke and earth wears out like a garment. Yet His salvation endures forever. The coastlands—the farthest peoples—wait for His arm of deliverance. This is hope that transcends temporal decay.
"My salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed."
— Isaiah 51:6
Remember Your Roots
The Rock
"Look to the rock from which you were hewn"—remember your origins and ancestors.
Abraham & Sarah
One barren couple, ages 100 and 90, birthed an entire nation through God's promise.
Multiplied
From "as good as dead" came multitudes—proof God keeps His promises.
Israel must see what God has done to understand what He will do. The nation came from a child born to impossibly aged parents. Don't you see God's faithfulness?
From Wasteland to Eden
The Desolation
  • Promised land laid waste
  • Temple destroyed
  • Jerusalem sacked
  • Walls broken down
  • Weeping and sorrow
The Restoration
  • Wilderness becomes Eden
  • Desert like God's garden
  • Joy and gladness found
  • Thanksgiving and song
  • Life in abundance
God promised to comfort Zion and transform her waste places. Where humanity once thrived under God's provision in Eden, a new Jerusalem awaits—a new garden where God walks with His people.
A Light to the Peoples
Give Attention
"Give ear to me, my nation"—God calls His wayward people back.
New Law
A law will go out—not Moses' law revealing sin, but God's justice bringing salvation.
Light Shines
God's justice serves as light to all peoples, reaching beyond Israel.
His Righteousness, Not Ours
0
Human Righteousness
"None is righteous, no not one" (Romans 3:10)
100%
God's Righteousness
We rely completely on His righteousness for salvation
His righteousness draws near. His salvation has gone out. His arms will judge the peoples. We cannot save ourselves—we need God's righteousness clothing us like garments of salvation, covering us with robes of righteousness.
"Those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified."
— Romans 8:30
The Coastlands Hope
1
Unknown Lands
Far-off maritime places at map's edge—utterly pagan, utterly distant.
2
Global Salvation
God promises salvation reaching earth's ends, not just Jewish redemption.
3
Gentiles Rejoice
"As many as were appointed to eternal life believed" (Acts 13:48).
4
We Are Coastlands
Those once far off brought near through Christ's salvation.
Paul quotes Isaiah 51:4 to justify taking the gospel to Gentiles: "I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth."
Eternal vs. Temporal
What Fades
Heavens vanish like smoke. Earth wears out like a garment. All who dwell in it will die. Everything we see, feel, taste, touch, and smell disappears in an instant.
What Endures
God's salvation will be forever. His righteousness will never be dismayed. We shall be like Him, transformed from glory to glory by the Spirit.
Consider God's power to make everything disappear. All will stand before this righteous God and give account. But those who hope in Him have no reason to fear—His salvation is everlasting.
Three Applications for Today
01
God Revives Barren Ground (v. 1-3)
If God made a great nation from one barren couple, He can transform wasteland into Eden. We're aliens and strangers here, hoping for a new heaven and earth—a place Jesus prepares where God dwells with us forever.
02
Salvation Goes to Nations (v. 4-6)
The coastlands hope for Him. Wherever we go, we make disciples. The gospel reaches the farthest places—when the last is reached, the end comes. This is our calling: take the gospel everywhere.
03
Hope Endures Eternally (v. 7-8)
Those who know have "put on the hope of salvation as a helmet" (1 Thes. 5:8) will endure forever. Your inheritance is "kept in heaven for you"—a double-guarantee. (1 Peter 1:3-5) Nothing can strip away what Jesus offers.
The Coastlands Hope for Eternity
Our Living Hope
Peter wrote we are "born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ...to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you." Both you and your inheritance are secure forever. God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
"Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul."
— Matthew 10:28

Beloved, the coastlands hope for eternity! Though everything in this world will be consumed, God's salvation and righteousness endure forever. What an encouraging word to those facing defeat—hope for those who come to Him by faith.
